I did it. I finished up my LEND trainee experience and my clinical fellowship last Friday. I'm now officially "free" for two weeks until the new school year starts. New job, new schools, new people to meet... nothing but excitement. I love the beginning of school. I can remember carefully selecting all of the "perfect" school supplies, writing my name on them, and putting them into my backpack weeks before school actually started. The excitement of a new beginning has never worn off and every year I find myself browsing through the boxes of brightly colored crayons and all the new kinds of pens. I remember the days of Trapper Keepers and multi-colored ink pens fondly.
For my two weeks off I'm keeping pretty busy. Have been at my parents' place since last Saturday helping my mom with random tasks and going through tons of old papers. It's so funny to look at things that I saved over the years and to read all of the old notes from friends. Life was so "life and death" in middle school. I think that every day there was some sort of crisis in my life during that period. It's been fun to look back at everything and to try to get things in some semblance of order.
I'll head back to Portland in the next couple of days, and spend the next week or so trying to get the rest of my boxes unpacked from my move in May, get some good gym workouts in, and try to get ready for the new school year. This fall I'll be at one elementary for 3 days and a second elementary for 2 day. I'm so excited to be back in the public schools and to be a part of those communities. Fun stuff!
I should probably get back to doing something a bit more productive...

Summer is here!
The weather outside doesn't really look like it, but the calendar says it's summer. I actually prefer the cooler 70s to the steamy 90s we had a while ago.
I'm officially into my new rotation at work now, spending 1.5 days at Scottish Rite Clinic, .5 days doing bilingual speech/language evaluations, 1 day in "big kid" (adolescent) autism clinic, and 1 day in Down syndrome clinic. I don't like having so many evaluation reports every week (they always seem to spill over into my weekends), but it's a necessary evil. Not too many weeks left.
Chris and I haven't had too many exciting adventures recently aside from going to Seattle for graduation. Hopefully next summer we'll get to take a trip of some sort once I have a paycheck coming in on a regular basis. Can't wait for that!
Guess I'd better get to those reports. I've managed to find about a million things to do in my apartment in order to avoid them, but the time has come.
Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there!

It's all over and yet just beginning...
I'm back in blog world again, with intentions to update more frequently than every 6 months!
As the title of this blog suggests, I'm facing another big beginning soon. Many of you might remember that back in 2005 I left my full-teaching job in Woodburn, OR and went back to school to pursue a degree in speech-language pathology. I spent a year at Portland State University doing my post-bacc coursework and then moved to Seattle to attend University of Washington. I lived in Seattle for 2 years before moving back to Portland last August. Since then I've been at Oregon Health and Science University Child Development and Rehabilitation Center doing my clinical fellowship. I spend my days working with children with special needs who have communication, feeding, and/or swallowing issues. The youngest kiddo I've seen so far was a 28-week NICU baby, and the oldest was a 22 year old young man. Fun times with lots of learning.
I'll be at OHSU until the beginning of August. I just finished my clinical fellowship, which means that I can apply for national certification and officially finish my Master's program. I spent this weekend in Seattle with my family and friends celebrating my graduation, which was fantastic.
I have a job lined up starting the end of August. I'll be working in the Portland area for the Hillsboro School District in two elementary schools. I realized after spending a year in a hospital how much I missed the school environment, and I can't wait to get back there! Yet another big change, but a good one!
No big plans for the summer, other than to finish up the last of my time at OHSU, and spend a few days at the beach with my family. Can't wait for that!
